Chapter 1
Sally screamed at the man, he could not throw her out there and just walk away. She kept screaming and rattling the gates, he needed to let her back in. She was the only one that could help them; they did not know what they would have to face in mere moments.
He was truly gone, and it seemed like all her screaming and rattling did not faze him, or any of his kin, at all, so she stopped and walked a few meters away from the property. She would re-evaluate her option; she had to find another way in, and soon, time was running out for her and for them.
She looked back at the unassuming house, maybe a first floor window or a back door would help her gain access into their midst. She started to move towards the back of the place, all the while gazing at the house. A window there, but it was shut tight; another here, also closed. She kept on towards the back, hoping that there was a back door, like most houses of a certain age were known to have. She reached the back corner of the house and had not seen any plausible way into the building.
She turned the corner and luckily, there in the middle of the wall was a patio door and it was closed only with a screen door. She would be able to gain access that way; she approached quietly so as to assess the situation inside. No one was near the door, she looked a bit longer and then walked in as quietly as she could. She stayed close to the interior walls as she walked further into the house. She needed to find the weak spot, the interdimensional opening; everything indicated that the veil inside this house was much thinner than it was in the rest of the continent.
She knew why they had escorted her out. She understood that the uninitiated refused to believe in what she professed, yet she could not walk away; everything indicated that something would be trying to destroy what was left of the veil and come to claim the Earth for itself. She would not allow this to happen; she would fight the humans along the supernatural if she had to. She was determined; this was her mission, and she could not fail, her coven would denounce her if she did. She would not let her sisters down; she would not let humanity down.
She was going deeper and deeper into the house, feeling the auras of the place, trying to pinpoint the thinning of the veil.
She was close, she could feel the change in energies. She was moving as quiet as she could, she did not want to be arrested before she could complete the spells that she needed to; time was of the essence.
Sally kept moving closer and closer; she did not see any of the resident nor did she hear any sounds, it was odd; yet she tried to avoid thinking about what this could mean. Too many possibilities, too many terrible possibilities; so Sally ignored the voice in the back of her mind and kept moving towards the maelstrom of clashing energies. Nearly there, she was so close, she could now hear the ghastly sounds from things that were not of this world. She paused her movements for a moment to listen and gasped as she realized that the voices were chanting a spell of welcoming, trying to entice something terrible to come this side of the veil.
Sally took to a sprint, following the sounds, and digging through her bag for her herbs and spell jars. She needed to be ready for anything; she needed to start casting her spell as soon as she was near enough for it to be effective. She pulled all she needed out of her bags with both hands; focused on her inner strength and connected spiritually to the energy from her coven; all in the space of one breath.
She began to chant loud and clear and with the power of hundreds of her sisters backing her. She could feel their strength and warmth through the energy flow, and they gave her courage. Their faith in her was astounding. She kept chanting loud as she went through the hallway, up the stairs and into a room right off the landing.
As she burst into the midst of what could only be described as a cult meeting, their chants died on their lips at the intrusion. Those few moments of silence gave her a chance to push more power behind her spell; it gave her the edge that she needed to get the upper hand in this fight for humanity.
Her voice was booming and overwhelming in the confused silence; she put all her will and love for people behind her every single word. She felt the voices of her sisters join her chant through the link.
Without stopping or stumbling on her words, hands were busying themselves with the spell jars and the herbs; she was adding sigils with as much intent that she could muster. As she neared the end of the chants once again, she was readying to send the powerful herbs and spell jars empowered with sigils through the veil to close it once and for all.
Her sisters’ voices rose higher with hers as the last few words were uttered. She sent the herbs and spell jars into the veil on the last word and a loud swoosh was heard as energies were pulled back into the other dimension. The cultists were all pulled into the other side in a cacophony of terrified screams.
And just like that, they had avoided the apocalypse, and no one would ever know.
This was the way of her coven, balance the good and evil and leave no trace of their interference.
The End
