Meeting him

Elena adjusted the sleeve of her blouse for the third time.

“You’re nervous,” her husband, Mark, said with a small smile as he leaned against the kitchen counter.

“I’m not nervous,” she replied quickly.

“You’ve rearranged the flowers twice.”

She glanced at the vase.

“…they looked uneven.”

Mark chuckled softly. “He’ll be fine.”

She nodded, but her chest felt tight.

He’ll be fine.

That wasn’t what she was worried about.

She had married Mark knowing he had a son.

An adult son.

What she didn’t expect—

Was how much it would matter when she actually met him.

The sound of a car pulling into the driveway cut through her thoughts.

Her heart skipped.

“That’s him,” Mark said casually, already moving toward the door.

Elena followed more slowly.

Composed.

Calm.

At least on the outside.

The front door opened before Mark could reach it.

And there he was.

Liam.

Tall. Confident. Slightly tired from travel, but still carrying a presence that filled the doorway without trying.

His eyes moved immediately to his father.

“Hey.”

Mark smiled, pulling him into a quick hug. “Good to see you.”

“Yeah,” Liam said, stepping inside.

Then—

His eyes shifted.

To her.

And everything…

Paused.

For just a second.

Just long enough to notice.

To register.

To feel something neither of them expected.

“Liam,” Mark said, unaware of the shift, “this is Elena.”

Elena forced a polite smile.

“Hi.”

Simple.

Normal.

Safe.

But Liam didn’t look away right away.

“Hi,” he replied.

And something in his voice—

Low.

Measured.

Just a little too aware—

Made her chest tighten.

“This is… different,” he added, glancing briefly between them.

Mark laughed lightly. “Yeah, I guess it is.”

But Elena felt it.

That moment.

That quiet tension sitting just beneath the surface.

Unspoken.

Unacknowledged.

But there.

Liam dropped his bag near the door.

“I’ll grab my stuff later,” he said, still watching her just a second too long before turning away.

Elena exhaled slowly once his back was to her.

Because suddenly—

This wasn’t just a new family dynamic.

This was something else.

Something she needed to shut down immediately.

Before it ever had a chance to grow.
