A gripping tale filled with action and adventure!

"Wow! This is a gripping tale of people with special powers/abilities living in a world of normal humans and the problems they face. Think X-men, with an institute, a professor and a whole lot of children being trained to accept their powers and learn how to use them. But, even with this comparison, the story holds its own, with enough differentiation to not make it cliched or the same as any thing the reader may have encountered. The author has created characters who will enthrall you and pull you along with them. The story is well written and descriptive enough to keep the images running in your mind as the scenes are happening. The fight scenes are wonderful and a lot of research and effort seems to have been dedicated to writing them as there is an obvious attention to detail. Nathan, with his copy cat abilities and James with his teleportation are the first we encounter of the Esper's followed by Freya and her brother. Their powers, unique in nature, drive a lot of the plot. Starting off with the creation of Espers and how they came to exist, details of when their powers are likely to manifest and how to identify an Esper, the author covers all possible angles. The story moves quickly, almost single minded in a specific direction and comes to a climactic end, leaving enough room for the next book. A great adventure to take, this book will have the reader hooked until the very end and is a very enjoyable read! Having said this, I cannot wait to read the next book, which is slated to be released soon."

Great Book

"This book was really awesome. The plot line was engaging and I can't wait for the next one to come out (it was pretty obviously setup for it). The author did use the word "latter" very often which was kind of annoying, but that was minor. Also, the story was slightly short and I felt like there was a lot of room for additional plot line and content, especially when it comes to character development. The character design was very rushed but still was descriptive."

Awesome steampunk/superhero thriller

"Hey, you really have a gem here. I really liked it, even if at times it seems like someone took every idea from every story I ever read and stuffed them into one story. Although it was confusing at first, It was interesting reading a story set in another country that occasionally had weird words in it. That's part of what kept me reading as that was unique, even if I had trouble figuring out what a gaol was. I especially liked the way you ended it. Way to surprise the reader and build tension and curiosity for a sequel."

"My life is literally book after book, but when I read the first chapter, it drew me in, calling me to read more than several adult, well-known-and-loved authors stories have. Grammar and writing could use a bit of work, but overall, this was an amazing story and I can't wait for more!"

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen meets X-Men

"This story is outright amazing, and I cannot wait for the sequel. The story comes to life, flows wonderfully, and has you turning the pages nonstop. The main character in the story, Nathan, definitely made me think of a Nathan Drake from the video game series Uncharted if Drake had superpowers. All of the supporting characters, as well as the antagonists were well fleshed out and intriguing. I was worried upon starting this story that it would be too cliche and reminiscent of already established superhero genres, but it quickly proved me wrong. I don't think I've ever wanted a story to be published and generating tons of fans this badly before reading this. The author's prose and world-building were out of this world, and the action sequences were put together so nicely that it even makes me want to see this played out on the silver screen. Simply put, I don't think anyone will be disappointed in this story."

Professor Xavier move over!

"Excellent read, the only thing not to like is that I could only read it at home on my computer. I'm a character reader, I get into the characters, their story, who/what they are. In this story characters are introduced and developed allowing you to really get into them. Next the story is developed, introducing additional characters and developing them as well. This story caused me to lose sleep, trying to get to the next chapter, the next event in the storyline. Kudos to the author, I can not wait to read more, keep the storyline going."

Quite Shocking!

"You've managed to pack quite a lot into the prologue, and I quite enjoyed reading it. You seem to have a solid sense of where the plot is going, and the pacing is well done. I made some comments in the story at places where I thought you could improve the flow of the writing. At times, it felt a little stilted, which I understand is part of the intended effect, but goes a bit overboard at times. The imagery was fantastic, I had a very clear picture of what was going on, and I thought that was the strongest aspect of this piece. This was a great beginning, and I'm excited to see where it goes!"

Great Idea

"This is a great idea for a novel. I can see it going so many different places! The action and fast pace really make it hard to put down. I can't wait to see where it goes. The brother could be an interesting character that really drives the story forward. He could also be a character with great dialog who snaps off jokes. It would be interesting to see what you could do with a boy-genius is captured story line. The concept has been done before but you have a unique writing style that could pull it off well. I'm sure that you already have some ideas of your own and I can't wait to read them!"

Very Interesting Premise Thus Far (On-Going Review)

"I've only read the first eight chapters, but I wanted to get down my impressions of the story so far, so that I can come back and add on to it later. So, here goes! I already quite like the character of Nathan; he's charming, funny, if a bit childish at times--and that's okay. He wouldn't be much of a character if he lacked flaws, too. I get this sense from him that there's more to him than wise-cracking, that maybe he does that as a way to mitigate whatever unhappiness he's really feeling. Likewise, the antagonists have proven interesting as well, particularly Shadow (who reminds me a bit of one of my own characters based on skill--but that's where the similarities begin and end). I'm also curious to learn more about the Baron, and what he intends for the Siren. There were some technical errors here and there, hence the four stars. That said, I'll definitely be reading more of the Esper Files."

"X-Men" and "Heroes" in Victorian England (and why that's not necessarily bad)

"To start off, the story had me hooked, since I read the summary and the prologue. It was interesting to see how these Espers work in this steampunk society, how the characters are (which remains the story's strongest point to me), and I like seeing all these powers in action. Plus, it does have a sort of British feel to it, like when you watch Doctor Who or a Sherlock Holmes serial. It was creative to read the world surrounding it, the writing was good to read, and I do hope to see what will happen to our heroes in the future. However, I admit there was a voice in the back of my head telling me "It's just X-Men and Heroes! Stop praising it so much!" The powers do seem similar to the stuff I've seen, so much I almost had to agree with it, especially when I saw your own version of Deadpool. Also (and this is no doubt just a coincidence), I noticed the story followed some plot points from the first X-men movie (girl has power she can't control, girl bonds with a gruff sorta fellow who has a heart of gold, and a group of super-powered individuals-led by a wise, old professor-stop a super-powered mad-man from taking over the world). At the same time, this works to the story's advantage. The plot points I mentioned are from a typical comic book story, and considering this just X-men in Victorian England, it works to its own benefit. Besides, there may be new ways for our heroes to develop their own powers in new, unique ways as more books are published. Overall, "The Esper Files" is still a fun read. I doubt my nitpicks I mentioned will change my view of the story, which is a good start of what is to come. -W.S."
