Tidal wave of emotions
"Hat is off to this author! The emotional tension and subtle conflict is fantastic, and you can almost feel the internal conflict rising in Edith. No putting this book down once started."
Absolutely Heart-stopping
"Well, that's certainly a way to keep someone at the edge of their now sweat-laden seat cushion. The dangers of assumption, the line between obsession and familial adoration, the sharp contemporary criticism make Jay Melzer's "Mama" an instant favorite. There's no shying away from the ugly here, especially when said ugly is packaged in beautiful prose meant to disarm you. I recommend for anyone who isn't daunted by complex horrors with emotional whirlwinds, complicated characters, and metaphors upon metaphors."
Fast Paced Tragedy
"Wow! This one caught me off-guard. I am actually a little heartbroken by the end of this story. You won't see the twist coming. Jay writes snappy prose that keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. The story is also the perfect length for the plot to be unearthed and the twists to come to light. I can't recommend this story more highly."
Short But Thrilling
"There's a feeling you get when you read something great. You are at the edge of your seat, you're bitting your nails and turning pages almost faster than you can read them. A sense of danger suffocates you, urging you to find out what happens next as quickly as possible yet in the end all that remains is the bittersweet feeling of knowing, yet not knowing, that truly the story is over. How will the surviving characters live with what they had just experienced? Did these characters deserve their ending? Is there a sequel I can read to patch the hole that now lies where my heart should be? “Mama” is nine chapters of excellent writing I didn't regret reading. The plot is magnificently paced and is wrapped up in the span of a single day. It is a magnificent read for anyone who lacks a queasy stomach and has a tolerance for well-placed gore and hightened tension."
Interesting
"The plot twist, the flow of the chapters, the depth of the characters, the scenery. I could go on but the book is nothing if not interesting. Everyone is crazy in their own way in this story "
Incredible.
"It is really hard to come up with a review for this because I just want to rant at how incredible it is. Extremely well thought out and well written. I never would have been able to anticipate what goes on in this and the depth of the characters is phenomenal. Worth the read, worth all of your time."
So in love
"I am so in love with your story. the first three chapters are really captivating."
Beautiful!
"This book is such a page-turner! I got hooked right from the first chapter and was at the edge of my seat the entire time. Your vivid and realistic descriptions of Edith's emotions granted life to her, especially the part where you described her indecisiveness and anxiousness about Joanna. Stunning scene! I loved how your narrative flowed, so smooth and effortless, and it showed how much the writer was connected to the characters that he could grasp her emotions, her feelings, her internal conflicts so realistically. Your poetic wording was so breathtakingly beautiful; it made me gasp. I don't think I am capable of pointing out any grammar or punctuation errors because it was spot on! Amazing work! Hope to read more from you in the near future."
Heart-rending
"Not often do I give out five-star so quickly and without hesitation. I was compelled to read the novella twice. I wanted more. I mulled over the imagery and language, and I digested the harsh realities that it had to offer. It brought to light some of the conscious and unconscious biases people face and falter upon in our current times. It moved me to tears, and I would recommend it to anyone who is aware that fragility can be the most dangerous guise."
Real, poetic and daring!
"I loved how psychological and character driven this story was. I've honestly never read such a strong LGBT story before. This felt so authentic. Reading out of the POV of a concerned mother who's love and expectation for her child blinded her and ultimately lead to a crime of hate... the biases and thinking patterns were so well described. This novella felt intimate and personal almost like a memoir based on true events, that's how real and unfiltered it was portrayed. The poetic language used to describe details and behaviourism was exquisite. The author has immense control of his lyrical writing and therefore captures certain images that remain branded in the readers memory. The build up of suspense really paid off beautifully."
