Ciaran’s POV
I watched as the Vampire King, Landon Stone, signaled for his enforcers to take away the children. To rip them from their parents’ arms and to be led somewhere, where they would be out of sight. I couldn’t hear what was being said when they were talking, but the second they started to separate children from their parents, even I could hear their screams…
“We have to do something!” Tynan hissed, ready to move out of the tree where we’d been hiding. But I quickly grabbed him and held him back.
“And do what?” I murmured low, forcing my voice to remain clear despite the knot that threaten to close around my throat. “They’ll slaughter us too and dead people can’t do shit!”
Despite being only 17, even our Master had on more than one occasion complimented my remarkable self-control. Which was also why I’d been trained in the art of assassination for over two years now. And while I’d been at the top of my class, I hadn’t been out on any missions yet.
And now it looked like the chance would never come…
Tynan was my complete opposite. Despite being my twin and an exact replica of myself, he tended to be hotheaded and brash. An excellent enforcer. A weapon used for mass destruction and damage. Together we were a lethal combination as one always held the other in check.
Darkness and blackness.
Just like midnight…
My attention returned to the people several miles below us. Father was already dead and my only solace was that he at least fell in battle.
The way he always wanted to.
I expected some sort of pain or sorrow to hit at the thought, but when it didn’t happen, I didn’t wonder about it anymore. I looked back to the place where Mother was kneeling next to our Father’s Pet. The human looked like Father had had her hands on her right before leaving for battle. Bruised and battered. But then again, Father always said she was a stubborn one, so he needed to discipline her.
The same way he disciplined us.
The same way he disciplined Mother.
Brute force!
Anyone who spoke out of terms in their household was met with the same brutality and efficiency that was taught in the training facility. The way their Master encouraged them to treat all their property.
It wasn’t love unless you spilled blood...
To my somewhat surprise, I realized that a huge black werewolf strolled right up to the vampire freak. Realization hit me then, and I had to bite back a snarl of anger. We’d only ever heard rumors, but it turned out that all of them were true. The King of Sin City was in fact a vampire-werewolf half-breed. Which was probably why the filthy mutts were helping him.
I really hated werewolves!
They were nothing but primal beasts, little more than sophisticated animals that knew how to mimic speech. If it were up to me, I’d have them all eradicated! Hell, if asked to choose between the most luxurious bed in the kingdom or the chance to sleep on a werewolf skin---
My choice would be the pelt every time!
Movement caught my eye again and I realized that the Vampire King was starting to separate the pets from the rest of the vampires.
Fucker!
He probably wanted to keep the humans to himself! Which I guessed were the women’s thoughts too, because they screamed and wailed just as loudly as the children. Hopefully, their death would be swift and merciful. Because, as Master always said:
Rather dead than in the hands of the enemy!
Once again, I had to strengthen my hold on Tynan, who was ready to jump into action. His red eyes locked on mine, and his fangs bared in a vicious snarl.
“There’s nothing we can do,” I pleaded with him, knowing the same helplessness and uselessness that he felt. He was breathing heavily now, and my grip on him tightened. Despite the situation, I didn’t want to lose him. In only a few heartbeats, he was going to be all I had in this world.
And he knew it…
Cursing under his breath, his attention returned to the sight below. His eyes shone with unshed tears and his jaws worked overtime at gritting his teeth to silence the roar that was boiling in his blood.
I felt him…
Following his gaze, I saw that the King was taking once more. Probably offering them to live as his slaves, because as one, everyone left behind shook their heads. Then he stepped forward and gripped the neck of the first victim. With a movement that even escaped my keen vision, the Mistress fell lifeless to the ground. His men then stepped in and finished off the rest.
Mother among them...
Then it was all over. The moment seemed surreal. The reality of it all was too unreal to grasp. Our clan was gone. Our Master was gone. And our parents were gone. There were only us now.
Me and Tynan...
“What do we do now, Ciaran?” Tynan asked, his hard gaze meeting mine. All the emotions that I felt were written all over his face.
Anger.
Confusion.
Rage.
Pain…
But while he showed them freely on his face, I hid them deep inside. Sometimes I envied my brother for the freedom he had, being able to express himself so easily.
I couldn’t!
An assassin ever showed emotions and right now, I knew that if I cracked—that if I gave in—we would be doomed. We were two vampires alone in the world. Rogues, in all aspects of the word. Odds wouldn’t be in our favor and if we gave in to fear or weakness now, we might as well just kill ourselves right now.
And then everything that Mother had done to keep us alive would be wasted...
“We wait,” I said, forcing the pain in my heart deep down as I planned for the future.
“And when the time is right, we'll get our revenge!”
