Hide and Seek: "Our Little Secret."

“Emma, where are you? I can’t see anything!”

Meghan’s whisper was loud in the confined space and seemed to press in on her like a third person. Cool fingers entwined within hers from somewhere to the left, and she breathed a sigh of relief, feeling foolish.

Emma, her new friend—well, only friend so far—had promised to show her the perfect hiding place in the old basement of the apartment complex where she and her mother had recently moved to.

“It’s somewhere where no one will find us. It’ll be our little secret.” Emma’s eyes had been fixed on the door under the main stairwell where the basement was located. A sign with big letters written in red paint declared that no one was allowed to enter except management, but that would do little to deter Emma.

That was one of the reasons Meghan liked her. Emma never let anything stop her from doing what she wanted.

A flimsy paper sign didn’t stand a chance.

Neenee73: The author managed to weave instant tension and mystery from the get go. It was a balancing act that kept me guessing and made everyone look like they could be a villain which is on par with the great writers of mystery like Agatha and Doyle. I was jumping at every creak. If you like tension in ever...
