How We Got Here
I’m 17 years old and the world I knew is gone. Good riddance. It’s not like the world I knew was kind. My mother was a drug addict and probably dead, while my father was in prison, also most likely dead at this point. The state thought I safely lived with my mother, no one knew she was rarely home and if she was home she was throwing up whatever cheap drug she could get her hands on. I fended for myself just fine. I was a thief by necessity, a flyer on the cheerleading squad, street and book smart and beautiful. I grew up faster than my peers so while they were having sex with immature boys my age, I went after mature men that knew their way around a woman’s body. Men who liked my young age, firm ass and tight pussy. I’d only slept with two men in my life. One was a one and done, he wasn’t my type. The other, I craved. He knew my situation, my life. The second I turned 18 he planned to make it official and marry me. Life, it seemed, had other plans.
I am brunette about 5ft 3inches with creamy pale skin. I worked hard to keep it silky soft with a good lotion routine, especially my legs. For some reason my boyfriend was obsessed with smooth legs that go for days, he even paid for lazer hair removal, everywhere. My C cup breasts were perky with or without and my thin waist was my main focus. Squats and crunches were the recipie to any exercise routine. My green eyes sometimes looked hazel when it rained, but i prefered when they were green.
It was December 17th, two days after my 17th birthday. I was asleep in the shit hole known as my home. Home alone, so when I woke up to a hand over my mouth I jumped awake kicking and screaming.
“Shhhh, Jenna it’s me.” His familiar voice hissed which would normally have calmed me but his tone kept me on edge. “Pack a bag and hurry,” he whispered. That’s when I noticed the gun in his hand and my eyes went wide. “Baby, I need you to move quickly. I’ll explain later but we need to move fast.” He pulled me from my bed, the sheet falling from my bare breasts. It was then my sleepy mind realized this wasn’t a joke. He was keeping his gun pointed at the bedroom door or window, completely ignoring my naked body. Fear gripped me and I nakedly jumped out of bed. I packed essentials as quickly as I could. With his free hand he grabbed another bag and started stuffing it full of things in my closet while I ran for my dresser and then the bathroom. Toiletries, clothes, what little food I had. I threw on the closest thing next to me, a soarkly, pink party dress and was done packing in less than 5 minutes.
“Ready, what’s going on?” I whispered. He threw my bags over his shoulder and grabbed my hand.
“Stay close,” he said and pulled me out the trailer home. He threw me and my bag in the back seat of his truck and jumped in the front. The scene around me looked straight out of a movie, families were packing panicked, everyone trying to get out of their homes in the middle of the night. I gawked as a helicopter sounded over head asking people to stay indoors and remain calm.
“Matt, what’s happening?” My voice shook as he navigated side roads. I looked over to see his tattoed arms tense behind the wheel. He was ablut 6ft 3inches with dark black hair and facial hair. He had a few grey whiskers in his beard, but to me it just made him more attractive. He was ex-army and still in shape. He could lift me like i weighed to nothing. However, his usuallu playful eyes looked afraid.
“I don’t fucking know,” he answered narrowly avoiding a collision by another car. It’s like rules didn’t exist, no one was stopping at traffic lights, no one was doing anything but frantically trying to escape. Everything was happening so fast that my ears finally noticed the radio was on, it was replaying an emergency broadcast signal and message. It was telling everyone to remain indoors and calm. I gripped the back of his seat hard as he went over a curb to avoid a recent car wreck.
“What I know is that it’s like something out of a fucking movie. Major cities were hit first and not just in America but worldwide. We don’t know if it’s military, aliens or if it’s fucking zombies but the world is literally going to shit.” He cursed as we bounced along backroads, leading out of town.
“You came for me?” I asked, my eyes darting around the scene around us.
“Baby, I couldn’t leave you behind. I told you, you’re fucking mine.” He growled. It didn’t matter that he was driving out of what might have been a war zone, that deep need he always created within me sparked.
“Yes sir,” I whispered. I glanced around and noticed my two bags, of probably everything I owned in this world and then a few of his were next to me.
“Where are we going?” I asked my brain finally recognizing this was not the way to his house, in the middle of town. We were clearly headed out of town.
“I have a buddy of mine, when we were younger we went half and half on an emergency bunker an hour outside of town. We never thought we would actually need it.
“Okay,” I breathed, glancing down at my phone. I had amassed over a hundred of unopened texts. Most were from different groups, our cheer group, a study group, and a few from Alexis my best friend. I scrolled through the cheer thread first, everyone asking what’s going on or some saying they were leaving town. My study group had a conspiracy theory on Zombies. I ignored everything and opened Alexis’ thread.
‘Jenna fucking tell me if you’re okay.’ Was the fifth text.
‘I’m okay, Matthew came and woke me up. He’s getting me out of town.’ I replied. Alexis was the only one who knew about Matthew or anything about my life for that matter. She was the only other person in this world that I trusted.
‘Good, you’re not alone. We are staying put.’ She replied. Alexis lived with her aunt and uncle after her parents died in a car crash. Alexis and I were close as sisters. While we watched petty high school girls cry over chipped nail polish, we knew the true world and its pain.
‘Please be safe,’ I replied. ‘Do we know what this is yet?’ I asked.
‘No, just that my uncle is boarding up the windows and doors. He was going to let you in but I told him you were staying with another family now that I know Matt has you.’ Alexis kept my secret, didn’t tell a soul when I told her of this man I met. How we met in a bar and he whispered he knew my ID was fake. He was 37, bought me beer and danced with me all night. We didn’t even have sex, he just wanted a fun night. No the sex happened months later.
‘Stay safe’ I replied.
“Alexis is staying in town,” I told Matt. He was still driving off road,
heading almost parallel to highways, but still avoiding the roadway.
“I hope she stays safe,” he answered. I climbed over the center console and into the passenger seat, my bare ass sliding into the cold leather seat as I buckled up.
“How far until we reach this bunker?” I asked. He had both hands white knuckling the steering wheel in a death grip.
“About an hour,” he was easing the truck back onto the highway. It seemed we were far enough out of town that this little highway into the woods was empty. The only light was from our headlights, that is until the explosion. A boom shook the air and lit up the world behind us.
“What the fuck?” Matt hissed as I got on my knees and turned around to see smoke amongst red and yellow light from fire in the direction of the city. I stared in shock as the realization of what was happening set in, this world I knew it as, was gone.
