1: The Quiet Story

Sunlight crept through gauzy curtains, casting golden stripes across the wooden floor and spilling over the picture wall, the story of two lives, side by side.

In the first frame, two kids, barely twelve, beamed at the camera, silver medals in hand, their cheeks still round with youth, their grins wild and crooked with pride.

Next came a gold medal, two years later, Alexei, taller now, lifting Lina’s hand high like they’d just won the Olympics, their eyes shining.

Another photo showed them triumphant at the Winter Grand Prix, arms slung around each other, still in their performance costumes, glowing with victory.

And at the end, the last one: not polished, but perfect, caught on Maxim’s phone. Alexei on one knee, the rink behind them lit in blue and gold. Lina’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes wide in joyful shock. A single tear traced her cheek.

Now, that same girl lay tangled in sheets and sunlight, her face relaxed, lips slightly parted. Her hair spilled across the pillow like honeyed waves.

Alexei couldn’t look away.

He lay beside her, one hand gently twisting a lock of her hair around his finger. Completely still, completely in love.

She stirred beneath the covers, the morning still soft and golden around them. He watched her the way he always did, like she was something precious he hadn’t quite believed he could keep.

Without a word, he reached for her hand resting on the pillow, lifting it gently. His thumb brushed over the ring he’d slid there just days ago, then he pressed a kiss to her fingers.

Lina stirred, eyes fluttering open, and blinked at him.

“Morning,” she mumbled, nuzzling into his chest.

“No nightmares,” he said gently, brushing her hair back. “That’s one week in a row.”

She looked up at him with a sleepy smile. “Guess I finally found the cure: Take one Alexei at bedtime.”

Alexei kissed her fingers again, letting the silence hold what words couldn’t.

“You were watching me sleep again, weren’t you?” she teased, voice still raspy from sleep.

Alexei grinned. “Guilty, but can you blame me? I’m engaged to the most beautiful girl in the world.”

She groaned and rolled onto her back. “Unfair. You know I can’t defend myself against that kind of charm before breakfast.”

“Good. I like catching you off guard.”

Lina stretched with a yawn, the covers slipping slightly as she sat up. “Mmm. I’ll go make breakfast.”

Alexei reached for her dramatically, pulling her into his chest. “Nooo. Stay Linochka.”

She smirked. “Do you want me to cook breakfast, or do you want to do it?”

He released her with a heavy sigh. “You know I can’t be left unsupervised in the kitchen. Fine. But don’t be long,” he warned wagging his finger playfully.

Ten minutes later, Lina stood in the kitchen, barefoot in one of Alexei's large t-shirts, flipping pancakes with practiced ease. The warm scent of browned butter and vanilla curled through the kitchen, rich and familiar, mingling with the faint chill of the morning air seeping in through the cracked window.

She hummed under her breath as she worked, nudging the pan just so, adding a fresh pat of butter to the skillet. The quiet was companionable, just the faint sizzle of batter, the click of a utensil, the occasional creak of the old floorboards.

She glanced down at the ring on her finger, barely able to believe it was real. Engaged. To Alexei. The boy who used to steal her gloves during warm-up and pretend it wasn’t on purpose. The man who now kissed the inside of her wrist like it was sacred.

She flipped another pancake, her smile soft and private.

Then came the shuffle of bare feet on hardwood.

Alexei padded in, shirtless, in worn sweatpants. His hair was a mess of sleep and charm, with a red mark on his cheek from the pillow.

He paused behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. His lips brushed her shoulder.

“Mmm,” he murmured, voice low as he nuzzled against her neck. “Smells like breakfast’s done.”

Lina nodded. “Yep. So if you’re ready to s—”

Before she could finish, Alexei spun her around and hoisted her over his shoulder.

“Alyosha!” she shrieked through laughter. “What are you doing?!”

“Adding to the menu,” he replied calmly, already walking back toward the bedroom.

“I thought you wanted breakfast!”

“I do,” he replied with a mischievous grin, giving her bottom a playful squeeze as he walked. “But I want dessert first.”

Lina giggled, pounding his back with mock protest as he carried her off.
