Chapter 1: SILENCE AND COLD GOODBYES

Taiwa

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the crickets of Taiwa began their nightly territory war, chirping into the creeping darkness. The air was biting, filled with the usual rush of laborers scurrying home after a cumbersome day. Amidst the faceless crowd, a petite woman stood out like a bruise on a porcelain doll.

At five-foot-two, Andrea trudged toward the bus station, her head bowed as tears cascaded down her cheeks. She was reading the same text message for the hundredth time, her thumb trembling over the cold glass of her phone. It was from Billy—the man she thought was her forever.

"I'm sorry Andy, but we're over. I was lonely and carried away by the moment. We are officially done!"

The words were a death sentence for her heart.

Driven by a ghost of a habit, Andrea found herself sauntering south toward the Damas District. She shouldn't be here. This was the land of the Donald family—the most influential dynasty in the region. Billy was the scion of that empire, the sole heir to everything the light touched.

She stopped at the edge of a private lagoon, a place that had once been the sanctuary of their love. A squirrel scurried away, screeching in the dusk from the very spot where she had given Billy her innocence. Bitter laughter bubbled up in her throat. He had never officially asked her to be his girlfriend. She had simply played along, blinded by the beautiful lie that they were in love.

Was it a one-way street from the start? she wondered. Had she been dumped by the man she favored with everything she held dear? She began hurling stones into the water, watching the ripples swallow her memories.

Hell's Lounge pub, Damas District

While Andrea sat in the silence of the lagoon, the atmosphere at Hell’s Lounge was a symphony of excess. It was a place for the "Dandies" and the ultra-wealthy. Under the dim crimson and sapphire glow of golden chandeliers, a dark figure sat in the shadows of the VIP section.

Billy Donald was taking shots with a quiet, lethal efficiency. Usually surrounded by a swarm of sycophants, tonight he sat alone, trying to drink himself into a stupor.

Six empty bottles of hard liquor sat on his table. He signaled for a seventh.

The bartender hesitated. He knew Billy’s reputation, but even a billionaire has a limit. "No, sir. I can't serve you anymore. You’re wasted."

"Is it my money or yours?" Billy snapped. His voice was like shards of ice, cutting through the haze of alcohol.

Before the confrontation could escalate, a sleek car screeched to a halt outside. Joe, Billy’s best friend, dashed into the lounge.

"Get out of my face and get me another bottle!" Billy was on his feet now, his tall, imposing figure swaying dangerously.

Joe watched him with a sinking heart. This wasn't the refined man he had grown up with. I hope this isn't about Andrea again, Joe thought. He stepped forward, the stench of booze hitting him like a wall.

"Billy, what is all this? Why are you wasting yourself?"

"I thought... I gave you... a day off," Billy managed to slur, his words punctuated by a ragged hiccup.

"You’ve had enough." Joe tossed a thick stack of bills to the bartender. "Come on. I’m driving you home."

As Joe hauled him toward the exit, the patrons stared. Billy Donald, the epitome of the "dark aura" that people feared and respected, was making a mockery of his own name.

Taiwa town

Taiwa was the ugly mirror to Damas. While Damas was a sanctuary of glowing streetlights and quiet luxury, Taiwa reeked of open sewage and desperation. The roads were dilapidated, and the nights were pitch black, lit only by the flickering lanterns of small businesses hoping to earn a few pennies.

Andrea ambled through the chaos, her heart stinging as she whispered the words for the first time: "Billy is my ex."

She looked back at the distant, shimmering lights of the wealthy district and made a silent vow: I will never set foot there again.

"Hey, bestie!"

A voice cut through the noise of the street. It was Janice, heading home from med school. Before Andrea could hide her swollen eyes, Janice pulled her into an embrace. The dam broke. Andrea sobbed into her friend's shoulder.

Janice and Andrea were more than friends; they were sisters forged in the hardship of Taiwa. When Andrea had first met Billy at a concert, Janice thought a spark of magic had finally hit their neighborhood. Billy had even secured Janice’s nursing scholarship.

"That bastard!" Janice’s anger flared as she read the text. "I’m going to find him tomorrow. He needs a proper lashing!"

"No, Janice, please," Andrea begged. "Don't ruffle any feathers. He's the reason your scholarship is secure. I won't let my heartbreak ruin your future."

Janice wiped her own tears, pulling Andrea closer. "You aren't going to waste away over a man who is probably at a club having the time of his life. Come on. I’m taking you home."

They walked in a heavy silence, arriving just before midnight. Andrea’s mother, Miss Lynn, was waiting on the corridor, a lantern in one hand and her phone in the other.

Miss Lynn was a refined woman who had been broken by years of struggle. With Andrea's sister, Steph, gone, she held onto Andrea like a lifeline. But tonight, her blood pressure was soaring. Only hours ago, the landlord had humiliated her over the unpaid mortgage.

The house—their only sanctuary—was slipping through their fingers, and the silence of the night offered no answers.
