Chapter 1

Adeline POV

I was born on December 25th. A special holiday for humans, but for werewolves it is a day of lots of food, getting drunk, and no school because you are on break for two weeks.

The day I was born was a special one for my family. My mother, Katreena, always wanted a little girl and she prayed to the moon goddess that I was a girl. My father, Axel, wanted a healthy child. He did not really care what gender I was, as long as I was healthy.

As for my big brother, Kyle, he wanted a brother, but what brother does not wish to have another brother to do boyish things with. Kyle is two years older than I am. I am turning eighteen in a couple more weeks. I am excited. My family wants to give me an eighteenth birthday bash, but I am strongly against it. I only have one friend, a guy named Joseph, and I don't consider him even a friend, if I am being honest. He just follows me around and says we are friends. I think he just wants to learn about me and then gossip about me behind my back.

I am not really liked by everyone as I am human. One of the things my parents were not upset at. I mean really what parent would be happy that their child is not a beast like them. I am basically part of a human. I can heal quickly, but I must close the wound first. I have super-strength and I am a fast runner. I just don't have a wolf.

Mom even took me to the pack doctor a day after my sixteenth birthday to have me evaluated, because I did not shift. I was annoyed that this doctor was giving me his pitiful look. I was disappointed, but that meant I just needed to prove myself worthy of this pack, the Whitepaw pack.

The Whitepaw pack's former Alpla, Maximus, and the former Luna, Lily, handed their son Maverick the Alpha title two years ago on his eighteenth birthday. I have seen Maverick on several occasions, when I accompanied my father to see the former Luna and Alpha. He had pretty ocean blue eyes like his mother and was body stature like his father, making him even more sexy that other male wolves.

My parents made me go and spend some time with them when they were busy. I would rather spend my time in my room, drawing, but my parents insisted I go out. They were getting on my nerves anyway, making predictions about who my mate could be. I ignored them half the time, not paying any attention to what they were talking about. I was ready to have my birthday pass, if I was being honest.

Lily and Maximus are my chosen godparents, as my mother’s wishes. Lily and my mother are best friends from the same pack, The Bluemoon Pack, and as fate would have it, it ended up in the same pack mated to the Alpha and Beta of the pack.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We lived in a little two-story cottage, which was a five-minute walk to the packhouse and Alpha’s house. My parents were out, celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary. They left an hour ago, so Kyle was stuck looking after me.

My parents trusted me without a doubt, but they were skeptical of the pack members who gave me dirty looks for being wolf-less. Luckily, the Beta aura my parents admitted made all the negative spectators bow their heads and give me a ‘sorry for the disrespect’ look. Kyle had the full aura, now that he was Maverick’s beta. I had the same aura, but it was not as potent yet. I most likely was never going to receive the official title. The title did not bother me. I was fine with who I was. I had a somewhat normal life, besides the occasional name-calling, ‘Wolf-less,’ ‘Humie,’ ‘Adeline the Ugly,’ ‘Diseased Adeline,’ or my personal favorite ‘W.L.G aka Wolf-Less Girl’.  The worst part was trying hard not to laugh at the lack of drawing skills they gave me as a cruel joke in my locker.

“Addy, you are going to make me late for training,” Kyle groaned.

“Just go. I don’t need a babysitter to walk to our godparents' house,” I yelled back.

“You better text me you make it there. Mom and dad will kill me if they find out I let you walk alone,” he groaned.

“I will just go,” I told him, rolling my eyes. I jumped down the stairs, two at a time, holding my phone in my hand and my house key in the other. I grabbed my wolfsbane brass knuckles and laced them into my fingers on my right hand. I was thankful Lily had gifted it to me for protection while I was at school or out alone knowing I had no wolf left me a target in a pack of wolves. Lily even taught me some fighting skills to protect myself, so I was not an easy victim, but a strong warrior. My mother was the one that asked Lily to help me learn defensive and offensive moves to protect myself.

I left the house, locked the door behind me and started my way down the path to my godparents' house.

Maverick’s POV:

I have been on edge lately, my wolf at the surface of my mind wanting to break out. I need to get him under control. I need to let the beast out later.

I walked across the field to the closest bench in the shade. I need to focus on the trainees. They will be shifting in about a week and they will need to be strong enough for their first shift and go on the first pack run. I need to tame Titan first, before I end up shifting right here and now. He has been on edge these past three weeks. Maybe it’s the fact he has not found his mate yet. I have asked him countless times what was wrong, but he is not keen on spilling the news either. I love my second half, but sometimes he gives me a headache and is as stubborn as I am. I would like a destined mate. I also try to picture what she would look like, but nothing will ever compare to how it will feel when I meet her. My parents and my beta’s parents are a true testament to that. They are the reason I never had a serious intimate partner. I dated here and there, but it never went as far as having sex. I truly saved myself for my mate and only my mate.

‘What have you all wired up now, Titan?’

‘Wouldn’t you like to know? You will have to let me out if you want to find out.’

‘Stop playing mind games, and tell me. We are supposed to be focused on the training field right now.’

‘Get up and walk around and find out. They are close.’

‘They. They who? Stop talking in riddles, damn it.’ My aura slipped out, making everyone on the field flinch and cower.

I quickly got up from the bench and walked away from the field.

‘Damn it, Titan. You are getting on my last nerve…’ I stopped mid-sentence as a settled whiff of lavender and honey filled my nostrils. The scent was mouth-watering, making me want more. Titan was jumping around in my head all giddy.

I was about to follow the scent when Kyle cut into my mind.

‘You okay?’ Kyle’s voice was laced with concern.

‘Yea, I’m fine. Titan is just giving me a headache with his constant bantering.’ I explained. ‘Continue training without me, I’m going on a run to tame the beast.’

‘Okay, be safe, Alpha,’ was the last thing he said before he cut the link.

I began my journey of following the delicious scent. I stayed in human form, not knowing if I was going to be able to control Titan in wolf form.
